Adventures in the heart of winter

February is a great time for camping and outdoor activities. The sun shines and the frost hits. The trees are covered with a blanket of white snow, and an incredible fairy-tale forest of snow-covered trees forms on the forested slopes of the fells. The higher we climb in the fell, the fewer trees there are and the amount of cannon snow only increases. Until a completely white "paljakka" opens up in front of us - the treeless top of the fell.

Heavy snow

Snow is beautiful and charms us, but it is a huge burden on the trees. At this time of the year, you can see trees on the slopes of the fells, whose trunks have even broken from the weight of the tree. It is incredible to think that the snow cover of a full-grown pine tree can weigh up to 800 kilograms!

The frost bangs and crunches

I love to walk, snowshoe or ski in January-February. Then the frost crunches and that's a sign of proper freezing weather. It's also a great feeling when the cold pinches your cheeks and you get red cheeks from being outside. A person from the south might think that -20 degrees is far too cold for outdoor activities, and of course it is if it's windy. When outdoors in arctic conditions, it is important to dress appropriately for the weather. Layering is an asset. I personally choose merino wool as the bottom layer, it doesn't feel cold on the skin, even if you sweat during exercise. My choice for the next layer is also wool. Nothing beats old-fashioned long woolen trousers and a hand-knit sweater. With a merino wool collar, I protect my neck and, if necessary, also my cheeks. The hat, mittens and socks are also made of wool. On top of this, shell clothes and leather gloves keep the wind out. For rest stops, I reserve a down jacket that fits in a small space in the backpack and a ski skirt that can be put on quickly if the wind picks up. These will go a long way and if necessary you can reduce the layers.

Short daylight in January

When moving on the fells in January, you have to take into account the short daylight hours and plan the stages according to the light. You should also remember that the weather can change quickly. In the fells, it is not a good idea to go forward if the conditions become really bad, but stop at the first deserted hut, hut or even camp.

A memorable hike to Nammalakuru

My longer trip in the middle of January went from Vuotisjärvi to Nammalakuru. My friend Sanna was my hiking buddy. The severe frosts brought a little worry to the trip, the meter dropped to -39 degrees in the village of Sirka just a couple of days before our departure. Fortunately, the frost thawed and we were able to go on our way. On the morning of departure, when we headed the nose of the car towards Palla, it was still dark. Gradually, the morning began to dawn and as we approached Pallas kero, we began to distinguish the contours of the fells and the white blanket of snow that covered nature as far as the eye could see. We picked up the keys to the reservation at the nature center and at the same time left behind the comforts of the modern world with running water. Of course, we still drove to Vuontisjärvi, where our trip to the wild arctic nature began.

I was equipped with a rucksack and snowshoes, and my friend Sanna was pulling her backpack and snowshoes behind her on a stick. In the parking lot, we laughed at how my pack could be so heavy for a one-night trip. I had cooked a delicious soup in a thermos and there were two thermos flasks full of hot tea and honey. I had also brought tasty reindeer sausages and made a lot of ready-made sandwiches. A bag of mixed nuts and chocolate was bringing energy. You wouldn't go hungry on this trip!

Aslak-Niila and the reindeer

When we got going, we did an extra 5 km round, because while excitedly talking, we just followed the signs for Nammalakuru, which some genius had turned to point in the wrong direction! This little tour took an hour and a half, because beautiful filming locations came up at a fast pace, and when we were finally on the right path, it was already close to one o'clock. We got a smile on our faces again when we met the reindeer herder Aslak-Niila, who was pulling a magnificent antlered reindeer in a sleigh behind the snowmobile, which was lying calmly in place. Aslak-Niila had gone to rescue a reindeer from a snowbank, where it had wandered because it was cold and hungry. In Lapland you meet wonderful people and stories, I never would have thought that a semi-wild reindeer would lie contentedly in a sleigh behind a snowmobile! We heard from Aslak-Niila that the reindeer herders had had a problem with the fells in the last few days and the route to Montell's Maja and from there to Nammalakuru was very busy. In the national park, only reindeer herders and the park's care staff have the right to ride a snowmobile.

This information made it easier for us, so we didn't know that snowshoes would be stuck in the snow, but that the trip would proceed comfortably on the beaten path. After taking the first lunch break, we started to climb up to the fell. Ahead of us was a 4 kilometer climb to Montelli Maja and from there another kilometer to Nammalakuru. There were only three hours of daylight left. The lower part of the trail was a tall spruce forest and a lot of powder snow.

Nature's fairytale

Our trip was at a comfortable pace, as you can easily walk along the route. Gradually, as we ascended, the scenery began to open up and we could admire Lake Vuontisjärvi and the distant white dangers. The trees became lower and the amount of snowdrift increased. On both sides of the path, a true fairyland of nature opened up, where each tree played its own role; when the figure next to the path was a dog, a bear, a loving couple or a horse with a rider. We were completely enchanted by the winter play and there were frequent filming breaks.

Paljakka, the white fell

Almost imperceptibly, the birch trees appeared and a white outcrop was already looming in front of us. The trail became softer for me and the bike, and when I sank up to my thighs, I happily dug out my snowshoes. The sky started to turn red and the sun began to sink towards the horizon. We now had to hurry to get to Montell's Maja before dark. The heaviest and most demanding climb of the route began. The rise was already felt. The pinkish colors of the blue sky began to turn red and the sun disappeared below the horizon. The wonderful colors of the sky mesmerized us and gave us the strength to continue climbing. The last kilometer was tough and when Montelli Maja finally started to appear far above, we felt relief, we would soon be able to rest for a while. There were fires ready at the lodge, which Katri, who had arrived before us, had lit.

Montelli's House

Rarely has sitting by the fire felt so good, we drank cups of tea and ate sandwiches and then it was time to continue our journey before it got dark. We continued in the dark, but luckily the route markers were not buried in the snow yet, and we can follow them all the way to Nammalakuru. Before we got there, night fell on the fell and we took out our headlamps. It was a great moment when we started to descend into the gorge and saw a small light twinkling from the windows of the deserted hut. The first stars lit up the sky as we descended into the gorge.

in Nammalakuru

However, it wasn't time to rest right away, instead the heating of the cabin started first. The temperature inside the hut was close to zero. When the fire crackled in the fireplace and we had lit the candles, the room started to feel like home. We fetched water from a spring, which we found easily with the advice of the inhabitants of the deserted hut in the dark of the road. After a while, they started walking romantically under the starry sky towards Lake Vuontisjärvi and we were left alone in the gorge.

Now I was thanking myself for the warm soup I had prepared and carried in a thermos and an extra thermos of tea - it was amazing to sit at the table and enjoy warm vegetable puree soup, sandwiches and ginger tea. When we were able to change our wet underwear and socks into dry ones and the warmth gradually started to arrive in the room, we can finally relax and stretch our muscles and enjoy.

Clear starry sky and northern lights

We went outside to admire the starry sky and the constellations, both familiar and unfamiliar, were incredibly bright and clear in the dark sky. The starry sky was like a dome above us, in it, under the universe, I felt so small, and my everyday troubles took on a new dimension. Inspired by the stars, we drew angel cards, tarots and power animal cards in the room, and the atmosphere in the glow of the candles was magical. Sleep began to oppress our eyes and midnight approached. We decided to go outside one more time and what a heavenly spectacle awaited us: the colorful green aurora borealis blazed in the northern sky. Their dance in the sky crowned our day and now, with my mind dancing in the sky with the northern lights, it was time to put my head on the pillow and fall asleep.

Morning dawn and drizzle

When I woke up at the crack of dawn, the tip of my nose felt cold and it was time to add wood to the extinguished fireplace and slip into the warmth of the sleeping bag for a while longer and doze while we wait for the cabin to warm up. When I got up refreshed, I admired the windows of the hut, on which the snow had drawn icy snowflakes. A snowy and white gorge could be seen from the windows.

I've never eaten morning porridge before, admiring the bare landscape of the fell through such a beautiful window. After breakfast, it was time to put the cabin in order, carry a wood box full of wood from the wood storage and leave to enjoy the return journey.

A blue moment in the fells

Yes, the gorge looked different in the daylight; Pallas' high Taivaskero here as a white peak in the south and Vuontis and Lumikero in the north. The sun was still behind the fells, but its bright light made the snow shimmer around us. When we got to climb up from the gorge to the fell, I can't describe in words the completely white landscape that opened up in front of us! We saw Katri going down the white slopes on sliding snowshoes, now we didn't stop at Montelli Maja but enjoyed going through the powder snow on snowshoes. It was a great feeling to walk on the white bare ground while the sky was colored a beautiful soft blue-pink. It felt empowering to fill the lungs with the cleanest air in the world. What a feeling of freedom always overwhelms my mind and heart here at the top of the great mountains! These beloved fells are so rugged and beautiful at the same time. They are enchanting in every season, this is the landscape of my soul and I feel very grateful to live at the foot of the fells in the village of Sirka.

The trip was easier than yesterday's hikes and soon we were already in the shelter of the forest, sheltered from the wind that had started to blow in the morning. We continued to descend and arrived in a snow-covered fairytale forest, where we tried to look for familiar characters from yesterday, but the wind had shaped a new magical fairy tale with new characters.

Return to Pallas and sunset

Even though at first the descent had seemed easier and even though we took breaks for drinks and snacks, the pack started to get heavy and the step no longer felt so light. The amazing landscape and the beauty of nature that opened up in front of us kept our spirits high and as we walked through the spruce forest, it felt like the end was already looming! No time at all when we arrived at the car. On the way to Pallas, dusk fell and the short January day began to sink in. On the halibut, we could admire the red-yellow sunset. It was like the final act of a great trip among friends. Nothing could have been more; we had been able to enjoy two short but sunny days, the sky had shown us its blue moment, the white landscapes of the top of the fell had enchanted our minds, we had been able to admire an incredibly dark and clear starry sky and we had been able to witness the northern lights dancing in the sky. The company of a good friend and the magic in the Nammalakuru hut crowned the whole trip! We drove home with a heart full of gratitude, Lapland's nature always enchants me with its beauty.

Crashing into a wall at full speed, nasty COVID-19 https://polarstartravel.fi/en/tormays-taydessa-vauhdissa-pain-seinaa-niljakas-covid-19/ Support, 08 Dec 2020 21:15:00 +0000 https://polarstartravel.fi/?p=2682 Wellness Retreats in Lapland Finland, Biking Tours in Lapland Finland, Accommodation in Lapland Finland, Travel Experiences in Lapland Finland Polar Star Travel

With winter just around the corner, I want to tell you how we survived the crash at full speed towards the wall. That's how it really felt. In Lapland, spring spirits were at their best, when that little "nasty" Covid-19 virus changed everything in an instant. The doors were slammed shut and Levi closed. At first I was depressed. How do we get through this? Not only did tourism stop, but also schools closed, hobby places closed and children were transferred to home school. I had to lay off the staff and worked alone in the office. At the moment, three phones were ringing at the same time and customers were inquiring because I would refund their prepaid accommodation fees, which they could not use. The whole of Finland and the world had stopped. I wondered what the point of all this was, and at the same speed as the money dwindled from the company's accounts, I began to lose faith in our company's chances of survival.

ADVENTURES IN THE FALLS SPRING IN THE SUN

I had never seen our village bathed in the beautiful spring sun so quiet. My recovery began when my family and I climbed to the top of a fell for the first time without answering to anyone. So we didn't see the cross soul. We went down the slopes of Levitunturi with a pole at breakneck speed, we climbed the trees with the children and it was a great feeling when we topped the last käkkärämäni of the tree line one by one. When I sat in the treetop and looked towards the north and the seven keros of Pallas, it felt like the whole world had stopped, and it had. Looking from the top of the tree, the whole of Lapland was under my eyes, and I got a strong feeling that nature continues its cycle of the year now, always and forever. That's how human life goes on. Closeness to nature is the permanent element here in Lapland, arctic wild nature is the refuge from which I found comfort and strength when the world around me closed down. It made my mind spark and the child inside me wake up and go crazy. Those moments in the fells made me believe in the future again, that this new normal will bring something new and wonderful.

PEAK WINTER SEASON 2019-20

I managed to finish the season, although not a single tourist arrived. I was working in the office and finally the end of April and May Day came. I had gotten all the advance payments returned and now it was time to leave behind that PEAK winter season 2019-20. It had been great and even though the world had heard news about that strange virus, we tourism professionals here in distant Lapland could not or did not want to believe in the power of the virus and the total shutdown it would lead to. When travelers had been arriving through the windows and doors all winter, this closing of the doors seemed surreal, only in a wonderland could this happen to Liisa. Now the time had come to start walking towards new paths and think about what that new and wonderful could be. For our family, it had been time together in nature, that precious time that had often been left behind by the rush and the season. We had become the team that overcame difficulties at home school and went on adventures in the fells in the afternoons.

VISION OF THE FUTURE - THE NEW NORMAL

I followed myself more and more closely and I can't describe in words the feeling of freedom and lightness I felt after each of our trips. My belief in being empowered by nature in the midst of a crisis came true when my mind rested and stress was far away while hiking with my family in nature. I had a strong vision that we all need rest and experiences in nature, far from large groups of people, the noise of the city, the children's home school and the whole corona hassle. The time spent in nature with my loved ones became the most important means of survival. And many peaks were conquered during the spring.

THE POWER OF THE MIDNIGHT SUN

In May, when Lapland's record snows began to melt and the midnight sun shone in the sky, my vision became brighter. Although the future looked uncertain, my faith in nature and its healing power was the path I wanted our company to take. For a couple of years, we had been thinking about how to increase the offer of excursions and experiences in nature. I had talked many times with my entrepreneur friend and true feller lover Raiski about his desire to retire, but at the same time find a continuation for his company specializing in nature experiences. He wanted to find a successor who would share his endless love for the fells and Lapland.

LAPLAND'S NATURE EXPERIENCE - EXPERIENCES FOR SUMMER

Now seemed to be the right moment for a new beginning and things fell into place. We made a bold acquisition in July and bought the legendary nature enthusiast Raija "Raiski" Palosaari's Lapland Nature Experience, which specializes in nature activities. My hand was shaking when we signed the deed of sale and I wondered what we were doing. After the deal, I went to the fells to make a fire and a lucky bird, a cuckoo, flew onto my shoulder and at the same moment I knew we were on the right path. A record number of Finnish tourists traveled to Lapland in the summer and it was great to see how they enjoyed themselves. I didn't even have time to count how many smiles and the look of a winner like this in rafting on a car tire, or how many happy hikers returned from Ounasjoki. Not to mention those moments in August, when the first aurora borealis blazed in the sky while we were sitting with the travelers around the campfire on a canoe trip on the Ounasjoki sandbar. I also don't forget the fatbike trips in the wonderful fell landscapes. Summer brought a lot of new experiences, joy, smiles and encounters with travelers, which I had missed so much during the spring break.

NEW WINDS IN RUSKA COLORS

in autumn, my soul really came alive and I went hiking with enthusiasm Pallas-Yllästunturi in the national park, wilderness rivers and nearby fells. Planning new nature activities, retreats and programs inspires me immensely throughout the fall. I love the crisp fresh autumn air and the autumn color scale is like a huge flow of energy for my soul. This fall, the northern lights also blazed on many nights, and my mind often ran away to dance in the night sky. Autumn was crowned by a photography trip with Tuomas Kytömäki's team to Hietajärvi and the fells. We photographed incredibly beautiful fell landscapes from the saddle of a bike, camped on the shore of a pristine fell lake and slept in tents. Lapland's fell nature gave its best. When I burned salmon on the campfire and looked around me in the darkening September evening, I realized how lucky I was to live in the middle of the arctic's delicate nature. That that quiet moment with a steaming cock in my hand next to my beloved entrepreneur spouse Juha is the life I want to live. A life that is as I see it and happy.

NOVEMBER – WINTER COMES

Now that winter is coming, the moment has come when we start to be ready for the publication of new adventures. From now on, they will gradually appear on our pages. The film we are shooting in September is ready and I am looking forward to the feedback from our followers. I hope the film conveys the atmosphere that our team had while making it. We have paddled, cooked on a campfire, cycled, slept in a tent and had a lot of fun while making the film. I sincerely hope that the viewer will be able to convey genuine Lapland hospitality, our passion for camping, and a huge respect for Lapland's delicate arctic nature. This movie has a piece of my heart and I'm happy to share it with you. I am so inspired by all this new stuff that has crept into my life and our company, and my mind is free from that little virus called Covid-19, which is raging around the world again. I believe that all of us "travelling souls" want to travel when that moment comes again and we get to travel!

Heidi Jokela and Polar Star Travel – The story of an entrepreneur https://polarstartravel.fi/en/heidi-jokela-and-polar-star-travel-entrepreneurs-story/ Wed, 28 Oct 2020 21:21:00 +0000 https://polarstartravel.fi/?p=2692 Hi, I'm Heidi Jokela! I am the energetic entrepreneur of Polar Star Travel, Polar Meetings and Lapland Nature Experience. In addition, I am the mother of a "bonus extended family" and the "nonna" or grandmother of three little princesses. I am the beating heart of my companies and our home.

In this blog, I want to open a window to the roller coaster of my life, share moments in Lapland's nature, and open up my everyday life as a mother of a "bonus family", a family entrepreneur, a career woman and a global citizen, and my search for a healthy - and as natural as possible - life.

The loves of my life are my five sons, daughter and three sweet nonna's (grandmother's) mussukas, my husband and business partner Juha and the Lapland fells. I wouldn't trade any of these. Every morning brings something new when it comes, and come what came, nature always delights me.

FROM HELSINKI TO EUROPE AND BACK

I am from Helsinki, but before moving to Lapland I lived in Europe for 18 years: Italy, Russia, Portugal and Great Britain. I studied languages at the University of Rome, after which I worked in marketing and sales positions in the tourism industry in Europe, mainly in Italy.

Lapland's wonderful possibilities as a tourism mecca opened up for me when I was working in the Italian sales of the Restel hotel chain and doing marketing for the Italian Tourism Promotion Center and Finnair.

I returned to Finland in December 2004. However, the dark and slushy winter in Helsinki did not feel like my own and I applied for a job in Rovaniemi at the legendary Hotel Pohjanhov. I spent a year in Rovaniemi, during which I got to know Lapland's arctic nature and tourism industry operators.

TO AND ABOVE THE NATIONAL CIRCLE

From Rovaniemi, my road led to Levi, where I led a project aimed at developing Levi's snow-free period and smoothing seasonal fluctuations. When I arrived in Levi, I felt that I wanted to put down roots here in Lapland. The fell landscapes and the incredibly beautiful eight seasons enchanted me. I met my local man Jokela Juha and that was it.

I became the mother of a large family and with Juha I also got three bonus sons and a daughter. In 2007, our family grew with twin boys, and my husband and I founded a travel company - and we are still on that path.

The peak years have continued for 15 years; we have run the entrepreneur's family with children, moved a log frame from Härmä to Lapland and built a traditional log house from it for our family. It is a real 100 % eco house! We have also founded two companies and lived with emotion, close to nature, as has always been traditionally done in Lapland.

ROOTED IN THE FALLS

Love for Lapland's nature, fells, unique local culture and wonderful people have made me root for Levi. Here, the light is special every moment: in the blue moments of the kaamos, bright spring days, in the sunlight of the nightless night and in the dark autumn evenings when the northern lights are blazing.

You can really notice the change of seasons. I love the authentic atmosphere of Lapland and the fact that here everyone can be themselves. In the season, people make circular days, but then, as spring progresses, you can sit on top of the fell and admire the fell scenery that continues to the horizon.

Arctic nature is not exotic here, but an important part of everyday life. Children ski or kick sled to school and on a berry excursion you can grab water from the spring with a stick. Here we collect the berries, mushrooms and yrits ourselves. We get reindeer meat from local reindeer herders and venison is used in almost every family.

Here, "Lapland's madness" affects every day. Those who arrived by train and the locals form a unique network, where it is nice to work as an entrepreneur and develop Levi together. Levi has always had plenty of strong personalities. Here, "crazy" ideas have been believed and together they have been made into Levi's strengths.

"Raisk's" stories can be listened to in the future as well, because he has promised to also guide when necessary.

The traditional village of Könkä in Kittilä still remains the home of Lapin Luontoelämys, where the rafting and kayaking programs start. Sales will move to Polar Star Travel's premises in Levi's core center, Torikuja. At Torikuja 10, you can buy Lapin Luontoelämys tours, rent fat bikes, canoes or paddle boards. You can also rent canoes or paddle boards from the Sauna bar at the northern end of Immeljärvi. The summer, autumn and winter weekly programs of Lapin Luontoelämys will run in the same way as before. You can sign up for summer and autumn kayaking, paddling lessons, fat bike tours, hiking and rapids adventures at the Polar Star Travel office, on the Lapland Luontoelämys or Polar Star Travel websites, or at the Visit Levi sales point at Zero Point.

"This acquisition has been in preparation for a long time, but in the end it was urgent, because the corona pandemic changed the plans in March. When the worst crisis was overcome, I began to understand that the world and traveling changed with the virus and now is the time to develop experiences in nature, because now especially people want to move around in open and clean nature. I believe that the demand for authentic and local nature experiences will grow," says Heidi Jokela. Lapin Luontoelämys will be part of Polar Star Travel's Nature brand, and the core of its operation is "Raisk's" idea of taking travelers to the nature of Lapland, which he loves, and to the landscapes of the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. In addition to traditional hiking, Raiski has produced e.g. kayaking, rapids adventures, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, kick sledding and the amazing experiential Amazing Levi playful competition.

"The most wonderful memories for travelers are often created from simple things, such as a great fell landscape or stories around a campfire," says Raiski. And you can find those stories from Lapland wanderer Raiski, and even though Raiski's intention is to slow down, he will be involved in Lapin Luontoelämys, consulting, producing and training. Raiski's journey on the paths of Lapland continues and he has promised to guide if necessary. He doesn't miss Halti's spring hiking on forest skis or kick sleds or summer kayaking in Inarijärvi at any cost. From the beginning of autumn, adventures designed for a completely new target group will be on sale at Lapin Luontoelämysk.

"It has been great to be an entrepreneur at Levi, there are entrepreneurs here, and the partners have always united as a vision for the growth of Levi and the enjoyment of customers. I would like to thank everyone for this joint effort," says Raiski.

"Raisk and I are united by love and respect for Lapland's harsh Arctic nature. We are inspired by customer encounters and we want to get tourists to become interested in Lapland. This Lapland craze is contagious and both companies have regular customers who come to Lapland year after year. We are both "brought by train" but rooted here. We became friends on a trip to Saana already 16 years ago. And we are also united by the fact that we are both mothers of twins. It is an honor for me to continue leading Lapin Luontoelämys on the path indicated by Raiski," says Heidi Jokela.
