New Moon in the August Portal with increased light and energy 7th – 11th August 2026

Join a magical drumming retreat in the summer nature of Lapland. During the retreat you will create your own traditional Lapland drum. The drum is made using traditional methods, the frame of the drum is made of wood and the drum skin is made of reindeer skin, dyed with vegetable dyes available in nature. You will learn how to use the drum as a healing tool and learn how to play and care for it. You will take part in a drum dedication ceremony.

You can participate in empowering nature light rituals, relax with drum journeys, enjoy the purifying steam of a traditional sauna, and socialise with like-minded people and enjoy campfire moments at home. The Lion Gate 8.8 creates open energies for the retreat.

The retreat culminates in a shared drumming session on Pallas, in the healing energy and light of the Arctic fell landscape.

Where?

In Lapland, in the landscapes of Levi.
Könkään village, Särkitunturi and Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park.

What to expect

Day 1. Friday, 7.8. Descent into Lappish energies and the beginning of drum making

Arrival in Taivaanvalkeat, Köngäs village on the banks of Ounasjoki river. In the boutique hotel Taivaanvalkeat, the mind rests and not even the sky is a limit for the powerful and purifying energies that the Tonttula experience village area brings to life. The hundred-year-old log houses and beach sauna create a magical setting for a retreat.

We will begin the retreat in the late afternoon, when the empowering and cleansing Lappish power drink will welcome everyone. The evening's programme includes an opening circle and dinner at Hotel Taivaanvalkeat. There will be an opportunity to use the sauna at Hotelli Taivaanvalkeat.

Day 2. Saturday 8.8. Lion portal day. Birth of the drum.

The morning begins with a delicious breakfast and a relaxing drum journey, which calms our minds and allows us to connect with the energies of Lapland.

We are preparing the space needed for the birth of the drum and familiarising ourselves with the history, stories, and use of the drum.

The birth of the drum begins on the banks of the Ounasjoki river. Everyone visualises their own drum in their mind, its colours, magic, and beat. Drum making is craftsmanship at its finest; a piece of our own soul is woven into it, and gradually the drum begins to breathe, its own colour, its vibration, and gradually a drum intended just for you is born.

During the day, a soup lunch is served in Tonttula. The afternoon will be spent with drums and towards evening they will gradually emerge from your hands and soul.

For dinner, nutritious food consisting of local products is offered. The evening culminates in the gentle, embracing steams of a traditional beach sauna where we pamper us with peat masks and herbal foot baths. The bravest can take a dip in Ounasjoki river. Purified and empowered by the sauna, the spring water cools our bodies and it's nice to go out into the dream land, with a grateful heart.

In the evening, there is an opportunity to participate in the ceremony of light and heart, in the energies of the Lion's Gate.

Day 3. Sunday 9.8. Finishing the drum and the amazing views from the summit of Särkitunturi and the crystal clear ponds.

The morning starts with a tasty breakfast and a drum roll, where we each have our own guardian animal. It's an animal that will walk along your path and protect you in the winds of your life.

In the morning, the drums and drumsticks are finished and left to rest. Get ready for the dedication ceremony.

After lunch, we head north towards the Särkitunturi national landscapes. We hike to the top of the fjord along an easy trail. From the top of the tundra you can enjoy the view over Tunturi-Lap.

In front of us, we also have a lake view of Lakes Särki and Jerisjärvi. At the top, the brave can take a dip in the refreshing crystal clear spring-fed pond.

After the fell hike, we will be met by four saunas at Arctic Sauna World, named according to Finnish sauna tradition: Wellamo, Ukko, Tapio, and Repo. We will be able to take a dip and swim in the cool embrace of Lake Jerisjärvi.

Bathing in spring water pampers our skin and hair. The sacred water of Mother Earth cleanses us, and by drinking it calmly, it also balances our bodies from within.

We will return to a delicious dinner at Taivaanvalkeat. In the evening, there is an opportunity to participate in a ceremony of light and heart.

Day 4. Monday 10.8. Dedication of the drum and the ancient purifying wind of Lapland, the power of the August sun and the chain of seven fells

The morning starts with a tasty breakfast and a drumming session.

In the morning, there is time to relax, to feel your own sensations in the midst of nature. Maybe write about your feelings during the birth of the drum. Summer's lush, green nature beckons and you may want to take the lead in gathering your own wild herbs for a Pallas home-cooked meal.

Soup lunch at Tonttula.

After lunch, we head to the mythical Seven Hills range, the magnificent scenery of Pallas. Here, at the source of the cleanest air in the world, we take a peaceful walk across the tree line to a sacred spring. After the fountain ceremony, we will all gather together around the fire at home for a drum dedication ceremony. New drums are consecrated and old ones are cleansed for new energy. We will prepare a delicious meal together at the foot of the Pallas in an atmospheric home.

After the meal, we hiked up to Pallaskero, where we drummed to the powerful, magical sunlight. The sunlight channelled new purifying energy, creativity, and strengthened our own heart energy into us.

Arctic nature is powerful, magically beautiful, and from the great fells of Lapland, the whole of Lapland opens up in front of our eyes. We thank Mother Earth and return to the village of Köngäs to Taivaanvalkeat with new energy and fall into a peaceful sleep.

Day 5. Tuesday 11 August. Concluding remarks and a moment of silence for gratitude

On the last morning, we will pause in gratitude for the experiences and insights we have shared. After a late breakfast, the retreat closes and the rooms are handed over. See you again!

Retreat leaders

Heidi Jokela is a bright entrepreneur and nature community leader at Polar Star Travel. His love of Lapland's Arctic nature has brought him from Europe to Levi. Heidi has found magical power in nature. He enjoys drumming in his home by the fire. Energizing drumming and being out in nature is his way of letting go of his busy entrepreneurial life. She invites women to her own power; to feel the nurturing energy of the beautiful and powerful Arctic wilderness.

Lilja Takalo has drawn on his family's healing heritage and numerous courses to learn how to make and heal a drum. The drums are made according to the traditions of Lapland and the retreat not only teaches how to make the drums, but also how to use them. ”Drumming is a universal phenomenon. It relaxes, empowers and relieves tension,” Lilja sums up. Lilja has also done nursing work with the drum for a long time.

For those looking for their own way, Lilja gives one tip. "Don't believe it if someone says you can't live your dream. You can also make a profession out of a hobby."

Mervi Savolainen is Polar Star Travel's head of guides and activities. This outdoorsman loves the mountains and nature of Lapland. He is a natural at cycling, hiking, canoeing and skiing in the Arctic wilderness, both in the snow-free season and in winter. Mervi also likes to slow down with yoga.
